Columbia Maryland is a unique city, classified as a census-designated place. The planned community is made up of 10 unique villages, and was created out of an idea that a city of its kind could enhance the life of its residents over their individual localities. After the 2020 census their population was determined to be over 104,000 residents, making it the 2nd largest city in Maryland. Unlike most cities, who’s infrastructure, growth, and zoning is created organically out of necessity, Columbia was meticulously planned, meaning economic demand was not the driving force behind the cities infrastructure and growth. It is that planning that has led to considerable growth and economic development in the surrounding area.
