Hurricane, WV is part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located in Putnam County, West Virginia. Hurricane was originally named Hurricane Creek, where a group of surveyors who were commissioned by George Washington in 1774, came across an area at the mouth of the creek where they found a bunch of trees that were all bent in the same direction, and deemed the location "the place of the hurricane." Route 34 now crosses that creek near Route 60. Over the years, Hurricane has evolved into a progressive area experiencing significant growth.
