Silver Spring Maryland, like many other large suburbs of Washington DC, is labeled as a census-designated place. The community is the fifth largest in Maryland by population. The city is located at the northern edge of Washington, and is home to many people who travel to and work in DC. The city got its unique name from the discovery of a spring surrounded by a mineral, mica, which gave off a sparkling silver hue. Today the city is known for its wonderful parks, and its extensive shopping district.
